Last week we kicked things off by going over some of the common umbrella terms in the kink community, that are often mantles that cover the broader basis of what we’re into.  Now it’s time to start disecting these terms and get a closer look at what each part part means, starting with BDSM and Bondage!

Bondage in itself is a term that covers a lot of ground, whether you’re into some light bondage, full on bodysuits and rigs, or the many art forms of shibari rope bondage.  Some of you may be getting a bit wide eyed at the latter terms, and that’s why we’re here to help you understand them a bit better.  You may be used to some light bondage and a little uneasy about taking the next steps forward, so we’re going to help with that.

We’ll start with a quick breakdown of some of the different applications, such as:

– Removing Freedom of Movement

– Limiting Movement

– Sensory Deprivation

– Shibari Rope Bondage

This is just a general breakdown, but all involve some form of bondage using restraints such as cuffs, ropes, chains, etc.  Many of them involve limiting someone’s ability to move, but some are used as a form of display such as shibari rope corsets.

Removing Freedom of Movement – involves binding both the hands/arms and feet/legs, or sometimes a full body restraint, that makes a person unable to move about freely.

Limiting Movement – can be utilized in a vast number of ways, such as binding someone’s arms or wrists but leaving their legs free.  This allows them to be lead on a leash or kneel, but does not allow them to use their hands.  This can also include harnesses that are made to keep someone in a fixed position, such as keeping them on all fours.

Sensory Deprivation – is more of a kink that will be covered at a later date, but it often involves bondage.  This kink involves removing a person’s senses to enhance others, but their movement is frequently limited for the sake of play.  This includes removing their ability to touch, and can sometimes involve suits and apporatus designed to remove their ability to feel anything on their skin by covering it.  This also involves restraining and restricting their movement.

Shibari Rope Bondage – stands out amongst the others, as it derives from Japan as a high form of art.  This art form involves complex ties that create patterns along the contours of the body, and can often leave temporary marks that form their own enigmatic patterns.  I would also say it could be broken down into its own sub-categories:

– The Art of Restriction:  Many shibari ties are designed to become stronger as someone tries to free themselves.

– The Art of Suspension:  This is a very common form used by Riggers, who use Shibari to suspend their subjects in the air with an array of ropes.

– The Art of Display:  This is an aspect that is shared among all Shibari, as many ties are also designed to put the subject on display as living art.  It is also part of the work itself, displaying the skill of the Rigger and the intricacy of their ties.

Bondage comes in many forms and often involves some form of display.  It can be exhilerating, sexy, and fun, but it also involves a great deal of trust.  When you limit your ability to move and react, you’re putting your safety in someone else’s hands.  This is why it’s always a good idea to have safewords in place, and it’s also a good idea to have a way to get yourself out in case something goes wrong.

We’ll have more on these safety measures in the near future, and I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the world of bondage.  We’ll be going over these topics in much more detail in future posts, while we’ll be having a look at Discipline and how it applies to dynamics next week.  Have a great week, have fun and play safe, folx!

When it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day, chocolates and roses are classic, but why not spice things up this year with something a little more adventurous? Bondage play can be a thrilling way to explore intimacy, trust, and a connection with your partner—and yes, it can also be a whole lot of fun. Whether you’ve only ever tied your shoe or suspend your partner from the ceiling on Friday nights, this Valentine’s Day guide will help you have a little knotty fun in a safe, sexy, and celebratory way.

Setting the Scene

Love, Trust, and a Sprinkle of Spice

Valentine’s Day is all about romance, so let’s start by creating an atmosphere that’s equal parts sweet and sultry. Dim the lights, light some candles, and cue the playlist (think sensual, not sappy). Add some red and pink accents—silky ribbons, heart-shaped decor, or even a plush throw for comfort.

The key here is comfort and communication. Before you dive in, have an open and honest conversation with your partner about boundaries, desires, and consent. Bondage is about trust, not surprise ambushes, so make sure you’re both on the same page.

The Gear

Cupid’s Knotty Toolkit

You don’t need a dungeon’s worth of equipment to enjoy bondage. Start with beginner friendly tools that are Valentine’s Day themed or just plain fun:

  • Silk Scarves or Ribbons: Soft, romantic, and perfect for wrist or ankle ties. Bonus: They double as a blindfold!
  • Fuzzy Handcuffs: Classic and cozy, these are perfect for restraint without intimidation.
  • Bondage Tape: It’s self adhesive and won’t stick to hair or skin, making it a versatile and forgiving option.
  • Rope: If you’re feeling adventurous, try cotton or hemp rope in festive colors like red or pink.

Pro tip: Always keep a pair of safety scissors nearby to cut restraints quickly in case of discomfort or emergency. Safety is sexy.

Techniques

Love Knots for Beginners

You don’t need to be a rope artist to enjoy bondage. Here are a couple of simple, beginner-friendly techniques to try:

  • Single-Column Tie: This basic knot is great for securing wrists or ankles together or to an anchor point like a bedpost. It’s easy to learn and secure without being overly restrictive.
  • Hogtie Lite: If you’re feeling playful, try a simplified hogtie. Bind your partner’s wrists and ankles behind them (gently!) for a cheeky Valentine’s Day twist.

Need inspiration? Plenty of online tutorials and books offer step-by-step guidance—just make sure you’re learning from a reputable source.

Adding a Valentine’s Day Twist

Why not make bondage part of your Valentine’s theme? Here are some playful ideas to keep the romance alive:

  • Heart-Shaped Harnesses: Use red or pink rope to create decorative harnesses that highlight your partner’s best features.
  • Chocolate and Whipped Cream Bondage: Restrain your partner and then indulge in some edible body art. It’s deliciously fun and a great way to incorporate sensory play.
  • Cupid’s Game: Write down different bondage scenarios or playful tasks on slips of paper, fold them into hearts, and draw them randomly for an evening full of surprises.

Safety First

The Golden Rules of Bondage

Bondage is all about trust and fun, but it’s important to keep safety front and center:

  • Communication is Key: Use safewords to ensure everyone feels comfortable. A simple “green, yellow, red” system works well.
  • Check Circulation: Make sure ties aren’t too tight and check for tingling, numbness, or discoloration.
  • Never Leave Your Partner Alone: Always stay present and attentive during restraint play.
  • Know Your Limits: Start small and build confidence as you explore. Bondage should be exciting, not overwhelming.

Aftercare

The Sweetest Ending

Aftercare is the cherry on top of any BDSM experience. Once the ropes are untied and the cuffs are off, take time to reconnect. Cuddle, share a glass of wine, or enjoy some chocolate-covered strawberries together. Talk about what you enjoyed and how you’re feeling—this helps build trust and strengthens your bond.

Bondage on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be intimidating. With a little preparation, creativity, and a lot of love, you can create an experience that’s both fun and memorable. Whether you’re tying knots or tying hearts, remember: It’s all about connection, consent, and a healthy dose of mischief. Happy Valentine’s Day, and may your night be delightfully knotty!

Rope has a special place in many of our hearts. Of all the types of bondage, rope bondage is the one that arguably looks the most artistic. It also makes for the best connection between rope rigger and the rope bunny. There are few things more intimate than running a rope along someone’s body and limbs, or feeling hands and rope run along and manipulate every inch of you.

Sounds fun, right?

Now, there are several types of rope bondage. There is decorative bondage, where the goal is not so much to tie you up but to dress you in rope. Harnesses, corsets, and rope bras/panties are usually decorative. There is floor bondage…Where a bottom is tied but remains on the floor. One more type is suspension bondage, where the bottom is tied, then suspended in the air, supported only by rope.

Just like there are all kinds of rope play, there are all kinds of rope, too. Not every rope is good for every kind of play. Choosing the right rope can make the difference between an enjoyable experience and an unfortunate accident (especially in the case of suspension bondage).

Here are a few types of rope that riggers use, and their best assigned purposes.

The Characteristics of Rope
Riggers evaluate rope based on the following characteristics:
• Flexibility
• Texture
• Friction
• Stretch
• Durability
• Strength

All of these are important to consider when choosing the right type of rope for your activities. Friction is especially important when dealing with knots. A low-friction rope is more likely to slip or tighten. Texture is important for your bottom’s skin…Some ropes, like sisal or manila, are generally not appropriate because of their very rough texture.

Strength and stretch matter most when it comes to full or partial suspension work. You do not want to use a weak rope for suspending someone.

Synthetic Bondage Rope
A lot of bondage beginners will use some kind of synthetic rope to start. It is inexpensive, widely available in hardware stores, easy to clean, and fairly easy to manipulate. Nylon and polyester are the typical materials.

Nylon RopeNylon rope is quite flexible, soft to the touch, and has low friction and a little bit of stretch. It is very durable and very strong. It is a good choice to get you started, especially if you are interested in Western bondage (as opposed to Japanese shibari). It comes in many colors and sizes, which lets you be artistic. However, please bear in mind that the low friction means that knots are likely to slip or tighten, so riggers must ensure the safety of their bottoms with extra wraps. Nylon rope is excellent for floor play and damsel-in-distress type bondage, decorative bondage, and for support in suspension bondage.

Polyester RopePolyester rope is also cheap, strong and durable. Its moderate flexibility and rougher texture make it a less likely choice for bondage work. It is still viable, but not usually a popular choice in general.

Natural Bondage Rope
For most experienced riggers, natural materials is where it is really at. The favorite material depends on the activity and rigger; for example, shibari enthusiasts tend to use jute, which is the traditional choice.

Jute RopeJust rope is the favorite choice for both floor and suspension shibari riggers. Jute is flexible and a little rough on the skin, has high friction and low stretch, and it has good strength but low durability. Well treated jute rope can be made to feel softer on the skin, but it needs to be replaced frequently. It is easy to dye as well.

Hemp RopeHemp rope has the same characteristics as jute, but has a noticeable smell and is a bit heavier. Many riggers enjoy hemp because it softens with time. It is also easier to find than jute and is strong enough to manage suspension work as well.

Linen Rope
Linen rope is softer and lighter than jute or hemp, but shares the same characteristics.

Cotton RopeCotton rope is a good choice for beginners because it is cheap and easily available. It is quite flexible, feels soft on the skin, provides moderate friction, and has a little stretch. However, the durability and strength of cotton rope is low. Cotton can be used for the same activities as nylon rope, but it not really suitable for suspension work because of its low strength. It is great for decorative work as well. Cotton rope is also easy to dye, which means you can buy it undyed and make it any color that you want.

Silk and Bamboo Rope
Silk and bamboo are used for luxury ropes. These are quite expensive, yet provide stunning results when used. They have the best characteristics of both natural and synthetic rope (flexible, soft, good friction, a low stretch, some durability, and good strength), but this comes at a cost. Bamboo has the bonus of being naturally anti-bacterial and shiny like nylon.

Sisal, manila, and coir are not suitable for bondage work because they are stiff and rough. It would be best to avoid these types.

So…The Best Rope for the Job?
If you are a beginner, nylon and cotton are your best choices. They are soft, easy to work with, cheap, and widely available. As you gain confidence and knowledge, you can move on to more specialized ropes like jute and hemp, depending on the purpose.

Hey Matthias, why even consider bondage safety?

Bondage plays the same role in sex as extreme sports do in athletics. Both go beyond the mainstream, pushing limits past the comfort level of the general populace. Both thrive on the adrenaline rush of feeling at risk and the lure of acting unconventional. And both are viewed as just a bit too wild or dangerous for “normal” people…Many of whom secretly wish that they could be just a bit wilder themselves so that they could participate.

If you decide to play an extreme sport, you take steps to make sure you do so in as safe a manner as possible, right? The same is true if you decide to practice bondage…While the risks to life and limb do not rise to the level of extreme sports, it is nonetheless wise to make sure you practice it safely.

With that said, allow me to go over some general practices for bondage safety:

-Engage in Bondage With Someone you Know/Trust

Remember: Bondage involves one participant surrendering control to another. The control is usually physical, involving ropes or various types of restraints and may include also entail mental elements of Dominance and submission as well.

Does it make sense to give control of yourself or your body to a stranger?

Hmm…Probably not.

Only allow yourself to be bound by someone you know you can trust a d has your best interests at heart.

That being said, some people tend to hear the “Siren’s call”  from the idea of giving control to someone they do not know. Now, if this is something you are into, take a moment to step back and look at the risks for yourself and people depending on you and take as many safety precautions as you can.

This could be having someone you know and trust present or a safety call of someone who knows where you are and with whom.

-Use the Other C-word…Communication

You have heard me say it before…Communication entails listening as well as talking. Listen especially closely if you are playing the role of a D-Type and use your eyes as well as your ears to listen.

Watch for signs of pleasure and enjoyment in your s-type…Furthermore, be alert for signs of displeasure or discomfort. Observing your s-type’s breathing is a great indicator for how much further you can go. Check on them by asking for a scale or pause-word (Such as the “Yellow” traffic light reference) If you think that the s-type is not having enjoying themselves.

Consequently, if you are playing the submissive role, be sure to tell the D-Type if you do not like like something. Always remember that you still have a voice…Do not feel obligated to put up with any activity that you are not enjoying.

Communicate any limits you want to set in advance, and repeat on the spot if necessary, so that the D-Type will know and can work within them…Also, be sure to have a safe word in place so that both you the D-Type can use.

Here is another tip…

Make sure that if you the s-type cannot communicate verbally (Like having either a rope or ball gag inserted in your mouth) that you both agree to have physical safeword in place…Such as rapid eye blinking, tapping their index finger or perhaps dropping an object that one could hold in their hand to indicate that they wish the scene to end and are unable to verbally used the safe word.

*finger snap*

Also, please be mindful that verbal communication might not just be hindered by gags. Some people have trouble talking when they are getting panicky and are unable to say their safeword for reasons of anxiety and other instances.

-Never, Ever Leave Your Partner Alone

Things can happen…You know it, I know it. There are a multitude of things that can happen to a physically constrained person…Going into worried, elderly parent mode here but what is there is a fire? If you are not there to help free the s-type they will not be able to free themselves. Ball gags are notorious for the potential of breathing problems, and it is also possible for the restraints themselves to cause issues for the bound party. Therefore, be sure to never leave the s-type alone if they are bound.

Note: Always have a pair of surgical scissors handy to cut rope or some other device that you know for sure (as in you actually tested it) will cut the restraints.

Furthermore: Although I love my blades, I would err on the side of caution in using knives…Especially if you are a beginner. In the heat of the moment, one may actually do more harm than good.

-Know Your Basic Anatomy

I am not trying to scare you but believe it or not, you can seriously injure a person if you are doing bondage wrong. You can tie of circulation, damage nerves, muscles and joints and worse. Just make sure you have some basic understanding of how to tie safely a knot.

As a beginner, I urge you to never experiment with neck bondage. If you want to incorporate restraining the neck, chose a collar that is suitable for BDSM play, such as a well padded one that allows at least one finger to fit between the neck and the collar.

-If Things Are Not Going Well…Stop

The goal in bondage is for both participants to enjoy themselves. If someone is not enjoying themselves, you are doing it wrong.

Stop the scene.

Remove the restraints.

Perhaps you went too far, too fast.

Perhaps you have found an activity that the s-type truly does not enjoy.

In either case, free whoever is bound, and then have a conversation to understand what went wrong and how to correct it in the future.

These bondage safety practices apply across all types of bondage scenarios and activities. Following them will help get you started in the right general direction towards a safer and happier bondage experience. However, there is much more to learn and discover if you like to bring bondage into your dynamic.
